Dear Journal – Children Are Great Teachers

Dear J,

It’s been a while since I’ve shared our recent intimate moments. This weekend was truly wonderful! I spent time with my immediate and extended family. Amid it all, I learned a valuable lesson—from one of my daughters.

I had an exchange with someone that left me feeling "some kind of way" for a brief moment. My daughter witnessed the interaction, so later, I asked her if she noticed it. She replied, “Yes, Mommy, I did.” Immediately, I felt a wave of relief—Okay, I thought, at least I wasn’t just in my feelings.

But then came the but.

The following words left me shocked, amazed, and ultimately thankful. She realized I was leaning toward taking offense and, in her gentle wisdom, offered me a moment of emotional uplift. “Mom,” she said, “maybe the response was this way because of this… or that.”

Her simple, tactful words shifted my perspective. She helped me see that what I was feeling might have been just that—a feeling, not the full truth.

Later, when I shared this moment with my father-in-law, he reminded me that children are often our greatest teachers. He also pointed out that my daughter's wisdom reflected the parenting she’s received. It was a blessing to realize that the village surrounding her is helping her blossom beautifully.

I close this entry feeling deeply blessed and grateful—to be a mother and a learner and to witness the wisdom flowing through the next generation.

Takeaway: Sometimes, wisdom comes from the smallest voices. Stay open—you never know who might shift your perspective.

Until next time!

Love,

Mel
